TH Cologne Feasibility Study LANDSVALUE Ready to Go

15.12.2020

Landfill gas contains methane in concentrations up to 40% which causes detrimental effects on our  climate which is why it should not be emitted to the atmosphere. Thousands of landfills all over Europe are facing this challenge of how to use landfill gas in an environmentally friendly way.

Together with eseia member BAV, the waste treatment organization based in NRW, DE, TH Cologne have been working on a feasibility study to improve the quality of landfill gas with photovoltaic and newly developed biotechnology in order to use it like natural gas for traffic and industrial applications. TH Cologne convinced the NRW government and funding organizations that this topic really was a European challenge and that after positive feasibility results, TH Cologne would be in a position to initialize a European research project as next step.

Thanks to eseia this was no problem at all: The idea was presented in the eseia WG ‘Biorefineries, Biobased Economy and Bioresource Utilization’ and immediately met with interest from eseia members from TU Graz and TU Vienna, AT, UAS Savonia, FI, and LNEG, PT. Thanks to very convincing LOIs of our partners, the proposal is on a good way to acceptance, so that the feasibility study is sure to start in spring 2021.
